Um grupo de pesquisadores da Universidade de Victoria, na Nova Zelândia, sugeriu que o degelo da Antártida, como consequência da mudança climática, pode aumentar o nível do mar em até três metros no ano 2300, segundo um estudo divulgado nesta quarta-feira pela revista "Nature".
 
A curto prazo, a simulação climática apontou que, no final do século, os aquecimentos da atmosféra e dos oceanos podem levar à perda de 80% a 85% da camada de gelo da Antártida e a um aumento do nível do mar.

Os cientistas explicaram que as mudanças na temperatura atmosférica e oceânica podem incidir nas taxas de fusão do gelo devido à troca de calor entre o gelo e a água ou o ar.

Embora seja difícil calcular com precisão a contribuição das grandes camadas de gelo para o aumento do nível do mar, o especialista do Centro de Pesquisa da Antártida, Nicholas Golledge, e seus colegas, elaboraram um modelo por computador que contempla diferentes cenários.

No âmbito da pesquisa climática, esses possíveis cenários exploram em que medida o homem poderia contribuir para a mudança climática no futuro levando em conta fatores como o crescimento da poluição, o desenvolvimento econômico e das novas tecnologias.

Os pesquisadores desse estudo contemplaram quatro possíveis cenários, propostos pelo quinto Relatório do Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas, que revelou que o nível do mar em 2300 aumentará entre 0,1 e 3 metros; e no ano 5000 entre 0,4 e 9 metros.

Se a poluição causada pelo homem continuar nos níveis atuais, a temperatura global corre o risco de aumentar entre 8 e 10 graus em três séculos.

A única solução para atenuar o grave impacto da poluição sobre a camada de gelo da Antártida, segundo os autores do estudo, passa por limitar a emissão de gases estufa nas próximas décadas.
